We are followers of Jesus Christ whose example inspires us to build creative lives based on love and inclusion.  We do this as a community of faith, as an urban parish, and as the Cathedral of the Diocese of Missouri.

Celebrating Black History Month
Every weekend in February is a new opportunity for us as a diverse Cathedral community to look at the history we share.  So be sure to invite your family and friends to participate in our unique series of offerings:

Saturday, Feb. 11, 8:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
Sunday, Feb. 12, 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and Noon

Freedom Rider Dr. Ernest “Rip” Patton will be joining us for two events on Feb. 11 and 12 to share stories of the past and help us look at the future of dismantling racism.

At the Saturday session, Dr. Patton will keynote Seeking Our Past, Creating Our Future, an event planned by the Commission on Dismantling Racism that will equip congregational teams to examine their own history with racial injustice and to chart a productive course to address current inequities of race.

On Sunday, Dr. Patton will lead the 9 a.m. Adult Forum, guest preach at the 10 a.m. service and, following the service, participate in a potluck lunch conversation in Schuyler Hall, located on the fourth floor of the Bishop Tuttle Memorial building adjacent to the Cathedral.
About Rip Patton
Fifty years ago last May, 21-year-old student Rip Patton boarded a Greyhound bus in Montgomery, Ala., bound for Jackson, Miss.—a ride that would change his life and the course of American history.  Rip was one of the Freedom Riders, a courageous group of civil rights pioneers who effected one of the most catalytic events for racial justice in the 1960s Deep South.  For his efforts, he spent time in Mississippi’s notorious Parchman State Prison Farm and was expelled from Tennessee State University.

Sunday, Feb. 19, 12 Noon
Come to Schuyler Hall after the 10 a.m. service and be a part of Gitana Productions’ Living the Dream 2012, a powerful dramatic and musical look at the continuing legacy of The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Sunday, Feb. 26, 11:45 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Bring your favorite homestyle dish to our annual Black History Month potluck in Schuyler Hall right after the 10 a.m. service.

Then return before 2 p.m. to the Cathedral, where the St. Louis Public Library welcomes social equality activist and author Angela Davis as its Black History Month Keynote Speaker.  After her speech, Ms. Davis will sign her books, which Black Book Consortium will be selling.

This event is free, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.  Members of the Friends of the St. Louis Public Library should call (314) 539-0359 for limited reserved seating.
Music, Music, Music!
Our Spring season of Sunday concerts resumes on Sunday, Feb. 19, at 2:30 p.m., with the 2011 Young Artist Gold Medal Winners in Recital, presented by the St. Louis Area Music Teachers Association.

Music at the Cathedral Is Not Just Sundays
If you work near the Cathedral or happen to be downtown at lunchtime on a Thursday, come and enjoy the 12:30 p.m. organ recital.  In 2012, the Thursday concerts will resume in March.

Back to Basics Resumes Sunday, March 4
Creation and The Fall.  Incarnation and the Cross.  Resurrection.  The Body of Christ.  The End Times.  We use these words all the time, but what do they really mean?  Sometimes we feel like we’re supposed to know—and so we’re too embarrassed to ask.  That’s where “Basic Christianity” comes in.

“Basic Christianity,” which runs from Sunday, March 4, through Sunday, April 1, is the third in our Back to Basics (B2B) series.  Dean Mike Kinman will lead the class in taking these basic theological concepts and diving into them, exploring them in all their meaning and mystery.  You don’t have to have taken any of the other B2B courses to take this one—all the B2B courses stand alone.

All sessions take place after the Sunday 10 a.m. service and begin with a light lunch at 11:45 a.m.  Class starts 12 Noon and runs until 1:30 p.m. in Schuyler Hall, on the fourth floor of the Bishop Tuttle Memorial building, 1210 Locust St., Saint Louis, MO 63103.

These classes are important—and so we ask a commitment to attend all five weeks of a class.  The courses are being offered in an ongoing rotation, so if you can’t commit to all five, you’ll know that the classes will come around again.  There is a $50-per-person nonrefundable fee to cover food and class materials, but don’t let cost be a deterrent: Financial aid is available.  To register for classes, email Dean Mike Kinman.

For your further information, the Back to Basics Flyer is a PDF that offers series descriptions you can download and print.  Please note, however, that the dates, times, and session sequences listed in the flyer have changed, as all classes have moved from Wednesday evenings to Sundays after the 10 a.m. service.  Also, the dates end in 2011—but for 2012, the sequence of sessions will be announced.  To learn more about Christian formation for adults at the Cathedral, visit Adult Christian Education.
A New Chapter for the Cathedral
At our well-attended Annual Meeting in Schuyler Hall on Sunday, Jan. 22, members of Christ Church Cathedral elected Claudine Allen, Tom Gardner, Dave Lawson, and Emily Lehr to three-year terms on Chapter as well as electing Susan Adams to a two-year term as Diocesan convention delegate and Lee Evans as alternate.  As a Cathedral community, we are grateful to all who demonstrated their dedication and commitment to the Cathedral by running for office.

For background and details, read the dean’s Annual Meeting-inspired sermon “Warning: This Changes Everything,” review the approved 2011 Annual Meeting minutes and learn what happened at the Feb. 4 Chapter Workday.
A Model for the Healing Power of Love
Dean Mike Kinman, Emily Lehr and Celeste Smith of Christ Church Cathedral were among seven St. Louisans who traveled to Nashville Dec. 11–12, 2011, and Jan. 8–9, 2012.

While in Nashville, they immersed themselves in the Magdalene program, a residential initiative that brings new hope and purpose to women who have survived lives of prostitution, drug addiction and violence.  The Cathedral team is learning ways in which a Magdalene program can be established in St. Louis.  “Love Heals” more fully reports on their mission.

The photo above captures some of the work being done at Thistle Farms, the social enterprise where Magdalene residents and graduates create handmade healing products.  If you are interested in becoming part of the Magdalene team, contact Mike Kinman.
Chapter Adopts Budget for 2012
As reported in the Chapter Notes emailed Saturday, Dec. 17, Chapter adopted a budget for 2012 at its meeting on Dec. 15, 2011.  You can read the full report that appeared in Chapter Notes and the Dean’s reflections on the Chapter meeting.

Then review 2012 Budget Options, a PDF that includes the current 2011 budget as well as all three options Chapter considered for 2012.  The Option 2 adopted by Chapter is highlighted in yellow.

If you have any questions about the budget, the process that generated the budget or anything else about Cathedral life, please feel free to talk to Dean Mike Kinman or to Chapter members.
Stewardship and Our 2012 Budget
Many of us have received and returned our mailed Stewardship time, talent and treasure pledge forms.  Although the Stewardship ingathering date was Nov. 6, 2011, there is still some time to return your pledge form to the Cathedral.  Ephesians 3:20 conveys the spirit of our 2012 Stewardship campaign: “Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine….”

As you prepare the form for ingathering, reflect on the words in the letter from Dean Kinman that accompanied the pledge form—or read it here.  You can place the envelope with the completed pledge form (both sides) in the Sunday collection plate or mail it to Christ Church Cathedral, 1210 Locust Street, Saint Louis, MO 63103-2322, ATTN: Stewardship.  If you prefer, pledge online.

In the meantime, please feel free to email Dean Mike Kinman or Stewardship co-chairs Heidi Clark and Deborah Nelson-Linck.  They would love to meet with you to talk and pray about your life at the Cathedral, your pledge and your blessed role in helping the Cathedral meet its 2012 budget.
Break for Lunch and Midweek Prayer
Every Wednesday this year, Christ Church Cathedral is offering “Midweek Prayer Break,” a brief service of prayer, scripture reading and silent reflection in the old Kemoll’s space on the first floor at One Metropolitan Square.  The service runs from 12:05 to 12:20 p.m., so you can still have time for lunch and other noontime activities.

If you work downtown or know people who do, we hope you’ll join us in this opportunity to make prayer a part of your weekday life.  If you have any questions, please contact Mike Kinman, dean of Christ Church Cathedral, at mkinman@gmail.com.
